Board design Process

In general, no design spec is required. Especially since this is a hobby forum. Just jump in and start building whatever gadget you are interested in. If you want to document something, start by listing the problem you are solving. Then detail the items like physical size, power requirements, inputs, outputs, features, etc. As the list grows, you may choose to further sub-divide this into items that will be in the initial version and items that will be in a later revision.

You will begin to see the building blocks of how it will all fit together. Some blocks will be needed earlier and some later. Make a timeline for each and then map them out on a calendar or Gantt chart . Finally, start designing the first block in the timeline. Again, if it is a hobby, you do not have to make formal documents or even work on the blocks in order.

Be aware that everything will be revised. As the project evolves, you will update, change and refine all the documents and plans.

For work related stuff, it is best to follow the guidelines used by your employer. There are no standards. Ask for the documents from a similar past project and use those as a template.

The number one rule is to be very specific. If you are writing a spec for either your employees, your customers, or subcontractors, it must state exactly what will be accomplished. Anything that is vague will be mis-interpreted or omitted.

Here is a link to an example. Notice that they specify things like model numbers of hardware that must communicate with this device. They specify the baud rate, the data format, etc. They list lots of details and indicate when various features will be available.

If you are bidding on a contract, ask for samples of their spec to get an idea of the format and details expected. If you are working with sub-contractors again ask for samples from their past projects.

Re: Board design Process

What you need to specify depends a lot on what your produce is, but as Banjo said, being specific is critical.

A quick Google on: writing design specifications
will provide some enlightening reading for you. Add in the name of your product type for more specific requirements.

For example:

All a bit like one of the first tasks in my Engineering Technical Writing course in college: describe, to someone who has never seen one, a: yellow, #2, Ticonderoga pencil.
