Need help with circuit

I understand that a MAX6954 can drive 128 discreet led's. What I can't understand is how to connect this chip to a matrix of 8x16 discreet leds and use the internal fonts on the chip to scroll. Can anyone throw me a bone? Thank you in advance!

Here's a bone from Maxim IC's web page. **broken link removed**

Need help with circuit

Thank you, I've read it. Unfortunately, the way I read it is that a 4x4 matrix needs 17 pins. By my calculations, an 8x16 would need at least 33. Is that correct? I've never worked with a led matrix before so be kind, lol.

A matrix of 4x4 is 8. 8x16 is 24. I looked through the document briefly, and it appears that the 4x4 matrix they show is actually a 1x16.

So, you're doing an 8x16 matrix. This chip has some wires serving as anode for some LEDs and Common Cathode to digits or whatever they may be. So, in Table 37, Slot 1, look for "CC0: 16 segment monocolor" and "CC1: 16 segment monocolor." Those are your first two. Go to Table 37, Slot 2, and you find CC2 and CC3, and so on. When you're done, you have CC0 to CC7, and 16 anode connections.

Your top LED in your row (or column, I don't know which way you're arranging them logically) is "a1". Make sure that your top LED always connects to whichever pin is labeled "a1" for each column.
