Relay life-time

hello
i using relay 250V and 2A rated.
I using in mains input.

will it last longer if i make sure when it switches on (closes contacts) that it has very little current going through it?.....ie say just a few mA?

What about if i only switch it at the zero crossing?...will it then mean it lasts longer cause i see it has only life-time of up to 10000 operations.

any help on how i can make relay last long time is excellent.

Relay is to switch out inrush resistor at front end of SMPS.

It will also stop inrush into emc filter components

Re: Relay life-time

eem2am,
In general, it is not possible to control the switching of an electromechanical relay so that it only switches at zero crossing because the response time of the relay is so slow. You can increase the life of a relay by using a relay that has a current rating much higher higher than the expected peak current.

Kral

An excellent reference for relay applications is "Engineers' Relay Handbook" published by National Association of Relay Manufacturers.

Relay life-time

is most relay damage (wear and tear) caused by switching at high current...or by just passing high constant DC currents
