widlar mirror

From: https://everything2.com/?node_id=1306226

A Widlar current source is used in analog integrated circuit design to produce a small driving current without the use of large resistors. This is particularly important because it is difficult to produced large resistors on chip that have good tolerances, meaning that it is very difficult to get predictable, reliable currents using large resistors.

The Widlar source uses two transistors fabricated with their bases connected together, and two small resistors. One of the transistors has its base connected to its collector, forming a diode connected transistor.

and from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Widlar_current_source

A Widlar current source is a modification of the basic two-transistor current mirror that incorporates an emitter degeneration resistor for only the output transistor, enabling the current source to generate low currents using only moderate resistor values.

The Widlar circuit may be used with bipolar transistors, MOS transistors, and even vacuum tubes. An example application is the 741 operational amplifier, and Widlar used the circuit as a part in many designs.

This circuit is named after its inventor, Bob Widlar, and was patented in 1967.

Hope it helps!

if u want good books on this topic, this is the list of some good authors. i do not recollect the exact title of the book. but if u search with the words " Analog VLSI design" i think u will get the exact title......

1) Backer

2)Geiger

3)Razavi

4) Allen holberg

These autours r greats of analog VLSI design.............

thank u guys 4 ur answers

application of widlar current source

The book "Analysis and Design of Analog Integrated Circuits" by P. Gray, P. Hurst, S. Lewis and R. Meyer will be very helpful

Do you have the link to this book mate................. i will be highly obliged if you could send me the link.........
thanks in advance.

Sorry, i don't have a link. But, if you find it elsewhere, it would be useful to know that the solutions manual is on some post on edaboard and i have it too, so don't hesitate to ask
