Hello there,
I am designing an RFID lock as my finishing project for college, so i would like you to help me out with your experience. I have read the other posts about RFID locks but i have a desing of my own that needs advice from you.

I want my lock to have an RFID reader connected to a microcontroller (probably using RS-232), and the microcontroller connected to a PC host by an ethernet cable. I also need a programmator for the RFID tags which will be connected to the PC host, and i will write my own software for managing the tags on the PC. I would like to use read/write tags, i mean tags which i can write data such as Name, Last name and Serial number of users. When the tag opens the RFID lock, i need the time stamp registered somewhere (in the microcontroller) for later. I would like to read out a list of the openings via the ethernet cable to the PC later.

Please suggest the most effective solution from your experience. Specific chips i can use are more than welcome. Thanks

I had built and worked similar project using ATMEL 89C52 and RFID bought from united77.com. The relay on board can be connected to any electromagnet to lock the door. But this kit doesnt communicate to any PC. They provide all details including schematics, PCB's and components with project description. Hope this will help you. The said kit is also available without RFID option. Chekout their website.
