Can we connect stepper motor directly to the voltage supply?

hello,

here is my stupid question.can we connect stepper motor directly to the voltage supply?? will the motor function?

No, you cannot do that. In a stepper motor the rotating magnetic field is created by switching the voltage to the windings. Without switching there is no rotating magnetic field and hence no movement. At mos the motor will rotate 1 step, if you happen to connect the right winding to the power supply.

But be very careful, some motor windings have low resistance and you cannot leave them connected continuously, aas the current is not limited and will cause the winding to overheat.

No it will not work, and I hope you do not try it, it will most likely damage the motor. The stepper motor has 5 terminals (usually), 1 ground and 4 coil terminals. The 4 coil terminals must be turned on and off in a sequence to turn the motor.
At a time only one coil must be energized (unless you are microstepping), the other 3 will be off. The next moment, the next coil must be energized and the other 3 must be turned off and so on.

Use a microcontroller along with a ULN ic (darlington buffer) to drive the stepper motor.

Connecting a stepper motor as a two phase induction motor might work.

You would have to connect one winding directly to the AC supply and the other through a capacitor designed for a phase shift of 90 electrical degrees.
