Can an XLR plug be replaced with a TRS on a mic cable?

You should check the equipment, e. g. mixer where you want to connect the microphone. There isn't a clear standard for using TRS at microphone inputs, to my knowledge. It is for stereo audio, also for send-return cables. Some equipment may require the ring shorted to the sleeve for microphone inputs, this may decrease noise supression with others.

Thanks so much for the info.
I'd probably be taking on more than I can handle but I might give it a try.
That Sweetwater info tells a lot. I didn't know they had so much tech information.
