What exactly is UL/DL MAP?

Hi,
Could anyone explain UL/DL MAP to me..?
I have a lot of pdfs but I am still confused what it comes to uplink frames and UL MAP. What exactly it is..? please help me friends..

DL map - gives information for current frame structure. as user (receiver, MS) doesnt know about encoding of DL map, DL map starts at fixed location and with fixed encoding scheme (layer-1). mac layer at receiver decodes DL map and gives information to PHY to decode the required (associated data bursts)

UL map conveys the information about UL frame and freq allocations to the receiver (which will use UL map to send data to BS). Not all DL frame will contain UL map.
