Dear Scientists

I only recently came across the Mayan Prophecy of 2012. I am a reader of the Scientific American and Nature magazines for a couple of years now. Yet, I have not came across an article of the Mayan Prophecy. It seems from what I have heard, the Mayan has a calendar which predicts what to happen in 2012. I just don't seem to find any scientific publications that support this claim. Does this means the science community doesn't think this is valid, at least not valid for 2012.

Furthermore, are we going to expect a switch of the earth's polarity near that time which seem to relate to the sun's so-called sunspot and the build up of ions on our planet.

I am not worried about the earth ends in 2012, it may be a good idea actually. But, just out of interest I would like to hear your view.

Kind regards

I Like this quote:
Whatever virtues the Classic Mayan culture might have had, predicting the future seems an unlikely one. This fact has not stopped some very bizarre speculation about Mayan astronomy. The speculators should ask themselves: what is the likelihood that a civilization that couldn't use its vast knowledge to save itself from self-destruction was concerned with predicting what would happen in a future millennium?

I deny any such Prophecy made by me :)

My philosophy is just to live for the day. If there is something that is going to happen 'magically', its going to happen and you can't do anything about it. If the stress of engineering has taught me anything, it is to just to relax.

Added after 2 minutes:

Well, I did hear 2012 is a year when the suns pole will flip again.

The Mayans were truly great people. We do not know the reason of their extinction. But the current topic 2012 is nearly true. Not because they did that prediction but because we are doing everything to get there. I've got some numbers for you. Earth's capacity to hold is 350 crore humans. We're currently crossing 660 crores. Every day we are increasing the pressure. It will soon handle the pressure in its own way.

According to wildlife biology theory there is a maximum carrying capacity that the land will support. Nature will use famine and disease to reduce any excess population. With the world using a limited number of grain crops it will take just one crop disease to drastically reduce the food supply.

I won't say it's impossible because, as posted before, we're doing everything to make it happen but how could Mayans predict the 2012 thing and were not able to see their own final...?

Hi there! A news flash!!!!
A meteor is coming toward earth and expected to hit earth in the year 2018. It is said that it is 3/4 th our moon. Thats quite huge! And its not a rumour this time.

I find it very strang that the Mayan's should fixate on 2012 and that what we see happening in the world seem to correlate? Supposedly, the Mayan prophecy was derived from some insight about the cycles of the sun? It does appear to be getting hotter, but not because of the sun spot cycle.

The empending economic and climatic changes that are about to hit us could very easily percipitate a globa war. Miss one or two of the major grain crops.... Oil may be the cause, but eventually it will be food and water that we end up fighting for.

Of course the experts warn of rising water 50 to 100 years down the road. The danger is out there in the future ... I'm betting on climate change, emerging diseases and the hand of man; in the near term not the distant future. By the way the weather is getting really strange here in the US....

The Big astroid, it is probably like the UFOs, the controllers are keeping us in the dark for our own good. Maybe the same applies to the global warming problems? I think it has more to do with the profit motive than anything else.

Keep in mind that since we do not realy understand time, maybe the Mayan's tapped into a higher reality and got a peek at what is down the road?
