Hi from Turkey.
I'm preparing for a competition which is about "Technologies Connecting to Life".
In this competition, our main theme is making life easier for handicapped people (mental, physical etc.). This is a student competition so we are not supposed to do complex or expensive projects.
I have decided to make an automatic door opener (I am not sure, this term is true) for houses. This system will provide a wireless door control for handicapped people, so when someone come to home and ring the bell, person inside the home can easily open the door without walking to the door.
This system will include:
1- For deaf people, vibration on remote control mechanism.
2-For blind people, a voice transmission.
3-Door opener.
4-If I can afford, an LCD display.

My question is, which wireless equipment I should use, for data transmission.
I have decided to use DTMF. But I have told that, this will be expensive, because using cell phone or handset need telephone exchange or something like that.

Now I am searching, Zigbee for data transmission. But on net, I couldn't find instructions about Zigbee systems (Okay, I found but I can't understand how to use them:)).
How can I use Zigbee, in my project?
Or has anybody got any opinions about the way of data transmission? Should I use DTMF, Zigbee or anything else?
Thank you and sorry about my English:)

Re: Zigbee or DTMF

I am not sure what transmission equipment you would want to use, but I can tell you that you do not need a telephone exchange in order to get DTMF out of a telephone. Sometimes you can take a normal analog telephone and apply a 9VDC battery to the TIP/RING pair on the phone (that's the two center conductors). Many times this is enough to allow you to use the DTMF transmission capabilities of the telephone.

Re: Zigbee or DTMF

Thanks for your answer. This way seems fine, I have started googling about that:)
But I'm still curious about zigbee.
