Does anyone know if using a silicon diode for a crystal radio will work?

Re: radio

Hi,
Since silicon diode has higher cutin voltage you need to amplify the RF before rectification, unless probably you are very near to a radio station. Otherwise, only Germanium diodes will work.

Laktronics.

Thanks, I have herd people say that Germanium is better, some say Silicon is better, and some say that it doesn't matter. We do have a local station I will try to build for and see if it works.

Re: radio

You can get a popular germanium diode for the same price as silicon diode, try to use it. Its number is 1N34A.

Anywhere but radshack. I need to find a better parts dealer. However I am going to try a silicon maybe even learn how to build RF preamps.

Re: radio

Where we can find 1N34 germanium diodes, because most distributors only sell silicon diodes?
I'm asking this because I've seen 1N34 used as detector in microwave circuits (detector placed in a waveguide), and i want to experiment with microwave at hobby level.
