school project...need help...

we were told to modify a radio controlled toy car to a safety car...

there will be a sensor on the front and on the sides...

the front sensor will detect an aproaching object and will turn off the motor of the toy car...

the sensors on the side will detect the lane of the road and if the car goes out of lane it will correct itself...

my question is...can i build my own sensors or are there any products already available in the market that can be integrated in the cars circuit??

if i build my own, how and what do i need to build it with??

The detector in front of the car can be ultrasonic or infra red.
Lots of ultrasonic measuring devices on the net.
Try "ultrasonic range finders" in google, lots of hits.

If you need more accuracy for the sensors on the side of the car, you can use laser displacement sensors.
Very accurate but smaller measuring range.

These ready made laser sensors aren't cheap :(

Yea, use this sensor and that sensor...
1. What is the size of your toy car? If its small, does any small enough ultrasonic Tx/Rx component available? Using laser displacement sensor, its huge from my experience.
2. What is the power source? Is it enough for those sensor, signal conditioning, this circuit, that circuit... come on, think!!
3. Your project is a mechanical electronic system which is very complicated to control (such as robotics). In this case, were not just talking about sensors, but how to process the input for a simple output...?

Please consider those factors to help others when you gave comments.

oh..sorry! i forgot

it must've slipped my mind...

the car is big...a lot of space for small sensors...

the source is a rechargeable battery pack...10v .850mA

you're right...so does that mean we still need to do some programming with the sensors?
 

Yes indeed, you need some programming if you are to interface the sensors with a computer or microcontroller..

by the way, are you doing a "line tracking car robot"?

If so, then I could help you alot (I've done that before in my college)

Nope, no programming it all :)

I think you can solve your problem using analog electronics.

Sensor in front: use an opamp as comparator. When voltage drop below x Volt because of object in front, turn off power to the motor.

Sensor on the side: use two opamps as comparator to turn the wheels (servo?) left or right according to the distance car/lane.

No controller needed :)
 

You can program if you are using uc, and dont need to program if you are using analog system. Try to review yourself about any abilities you got, such as knowledge of robotics, microcontroller, or any other. in that way, we can discus more easier. I suggest you to use microcontroller.
