HFSS optimization problem: steering main beam?

Hi, I have a question about designing collinear omni-directional antenna. Right now I want to steer the main beam direction to the horizonal plane, by using HFSS optimization.


Basically I want to make the gain at theta=90 deg the maximum, so How can I setup the optimization for this purpose? I found that we can setup the far-field parameters, such abs(Gain_total), but I don't know how to set up the goal.

It sounds like you are planning on examining a co-linear dipole array aligned along the z axis. If you feed all the elements in phase the resulting beam will be "broadside" in the xy plane (theta= 90 degrees). This result is well known and does not need a simulation to establish. You might postulate a particular feed network and do your analysis with that. You might also consider the effect of separation between the elements on gain and sidelobe level. Things get more interesting as you scan the beam away from broadside.

I would think that a different problem might be more interesting. You might find Kraus or Hansen's books useful.
 

Actually I am going to use a single SMA connector to feed a five or four elements collinear dipole array. So the optimization point is how to design the coil to interconnect the dipole elements.

So if the HFSS can offer the optimization method to make the goal as the fields at theta=90 larger than elsewhere, that will be good.
