how to measure selenoid current

Hello.
I need to measure selenoid current. (The selenoid controls presure reducing valve) It is powered by PWM. I don't know where to measure the current. In series with switching transistor or in series with selenoid and reverse diode? The measured current should be equivalent to DC current.
