Hello,

I currently have a project titled "Witness Camera".

My plan is to use Camera Module with JPEG compression + AVR Microcontroller +
Storage

I am awaiting any suggestions about the

1) COMedia C-328 Camera Module with JPEG Output
2) AVRmega32

3) Can we make a camera module of ourself?

4) I am refering to COMedia camera module C-328, what are the possible difficulties i have to face while making such a small module

5) How far a CMOS sensor is sensitive to DUST, and other problems.

Thanks in advance

Dear Members,

I think no one is interested in projects using camera modules. If any one are interested in projects with camera modules pl'se share your experience with me.

Thank you

Design of the camera modules from the chip level is a rare experience.

As far as I know, CMOS image sensor is quite sensitive to dust. For example, it's not recomened tochange the lens on consumer-level diigtal cameras, because dust particlec can settle on the image sensor.

Please refer to COMedia C-328 camera modules, It looks as if it can be manufactured.

They make use of Omnivision CMOS sensors and image processors.

I am seriously thinking of doing that.

The only difficulty i feel now is regarding soldering the image processor OV529, which is of BGA type. If any one have an experience with soldering BGA type IC at least for R&D purpose, Pl'se share your experience with me....

I am waiting for your valuable responce

hi..GEORGENEIL

I have used Omnivision OV7427 and make project on finger print catcher. OV gives me RAW RGB data that i stored in PC by using PIC18F4550 usb controller.. .for that i got sample of OV IC from one of the supplier in india and u also can get it from ur country just find out it and try to make contact with him,

Now i thimk u have to use batter OV chip for camera.. as i dont require such fine resolution thats why i prefer OV74 and also i think OV is fine and u will get many material from net..

For the Other side u can use any Microcontroller which has facility to out put clock from it (Like PIC has that) so that cryctal issue and Syncronization issue of controller and Sensor get solved,

Ok.. best of luck,

OV74xx series is an option. But they gives analog CVO.

I need to integrage CMOS chip with YCbCr Output+ JPEG Compression chip

A suitable combination can be OV7611 + OV530 with JPEG images via USB.

I am thinking of that now. and trying to get samples from Omnivision or there distributer in INDIA.

This may be a dumb question, but why do people use the Omnivision sensors that are very hard to come by while you can get others sensors from Digikey or others much easier?

On a different but related note, which microcontrollers do you experts suggest for jpeg compression from say a VGA sensor?

Best,

Please post some DigiKey (or other vendor) part numbers for the image sensors, and we'll provide some comparative criticism.

I've never heard about JPEG compression on a microcontroller. AFAIK, usualy people do it on an FPGA or a speciallized JPEG compressor ASIC.

Please post some DigiKey (or other vendor) part numbers for the image sensors, and we'll provide some comparative criticism.

For example Kodak VGA sensor Digikey part number KAC-9647-ND. Isn't it comparable with OV7620? Perhaps they are not one for one comparable but since OV products seem, to me at least, hard to get, Kodak or Micron from Digikey or any other online store are good alternatives...

What made me think about this is I was looking at the CMU cam. They use an OV sensor 6620 pr 7620. I looked online to check who has those. Every store has a few in stock. On the other hand, Digikey or others have hundreds of image sensors that may be similar.

How does the CMU cam store the images on the SD card? If I understood correctly, they do compression on an LPC2106 using libjpeg...
