I have a Binary counter and I want to use the output to switch 4 relays. I want one relay to come on at 00, the next at 01, etc. This was originally done with a multiplexer and transistors. Anyone think of a simpler way?

Are you speaking in something like 74155?

shift reg ..

hi .. maybe shift register ... 74164 etc .. data always hi, reset after 4 bit ..

Hi,
Multiplexer is the simplest if you are not making in large volumes.

Why not use a 8 pin u COntroller like 12C508.
If you are driving low voltage/current relays then transistor might not be required.
Greatly reduced circuit volume

Why don't you migrate to the 4000 family ?
with 4017 you have counter + decoder, otherwise with 4028 you have only the decoder.
Then a uln 2003 will drive just everithing.
With 4000 family you don't have problems with power supply voltage ( from 3 to 18 V ) and fan-in ( input impedance > 1 MOhm )
It is a little slow, but if you have to drive some relays .......

Re: Simple relay switching

use logic gates instead of multiplexer, i.e AND and NOT gates
