how to find lead compensation technique or lag compensation?

this is the perfect place where i would get my doubts clearified...

how we determine if the problem needs lead compensation or lag compensation if its not mentioned in the question just given a transfer function and asked to use compensation technique to meet given criteria or make the system stable?
