What is the main drawback of 8051 in comparison to 89C51?

If you referring to 8051(the original version) then I guess its OTP(not reprogrammable). The C in 89C51 refers to flash version. 89S51 referes to ISP(In-system programmable)

Both 8051 and AT89C51 is a 8051 core mIcrontroller only. AT89C51 is a CMOS Version which has multi Programming Mode(ISP). Both Controller has same architecture and same instructions code

Most probably 98c has large flash memory

8051 is the original product of Intel whie c51 is produced by ATMEL
architechture is same and c51 is programmable

Basically the difference is that 8051 is the original one, 89C51 is one of the many 8051 family.
If you are starting a new product, I strongly recommend you to use 89C51 (Atmel) or 89V51(NXP). Very easy to program (ISP), don’t need external EPROM.

8951 has the program in flash memory an 8051 in EPROM.

There are many 8051 derivatives around, with varying marking as per manufacturer. Some "rules" of the marking are described in **broken link removed** .

To answer the original question, the original Intel 8051 had mask ROM (i.e. internal code memory content is determined during manufacturing of the chip and cannot be modified later). Also, the original 8051 (without "C" in the middle) was manufactured using NMOS technology rather than CMOS, with the implications (there were also some minor differences in the clock circuitry and the power saving modes).

The (AT)89C51 has a FLASH internal code memory and is manufactured in CMOS technology.
