For the basic principle read ArtOfElectronics. You can build a switcher yourself with PWM output of a PIC for example. But make sure your PIC never crashes :smile:

For good efficiency yet simple to use circuits look up Nationals SIMPLE SWITCHER series.
 

Buck -> Step-down converter
Boost -> Step-up converter

Buck : mainly PWM control
Boost : PWM,PFM.VFM control

Operation Mode : Continuos / Discontinuos Current Mode( according to inductor current)

you can use the mentor analog designer to sim
you design.use it,you can find frequency response.

It is basic topology for dc-dc,i think you use google,you will find several huandreds imformation about it.

Ti,Maxim,Fairchild,national,All have applications about it.

Is there any design/chip capable of auto-switching from step-up to step down (&vice versa) by detecting the voltage output ?

P.S. I don't want to have inverted output => CUK converter is not preferred.

Any idea?

If you want to spend little motorola proposes with a MC34063 a good application step-up/down that it works!

SEPIC converters will do either Buck or Boost without inversion.

Linear Technology, LTC3441 can do that function
