patient monitor

Does anyone know about how a patient monitor with AC excitation voltage works?
How does the AC excitation signal look like? Is it a Sin wave or Square wave?
And wat does the Signal inputs it accepts? Must they be AC signals as well?

Thanks for any precious information in advance.

Regards,
Eric
