Hi,

You will probably wont believe it but this is realy the problem that I need to be solved.

I have a very high voltage DC source that I need to be converted in 220 VAC 60Hz.

The DC source is 10kv DC at 50 amps.

I would like to have a sort of power inverter or converter that would use this high DC voltage from the source to convert it to a standard 3 wires (2 hot wires with a neutral) 220 volts AC with an absolutely pure 60hz sinusoidal wave form of a very high stability.

The output power needed is between 2kw to 100kw.

Thus, I need the circuit to be extremly simple and easily scalable. I mean that the circuit can be designed to sustain only 2Kw if it can be easyly scalable to sustain 10Kw if and/or when needed. Probably by just having to add additional output transistors in parallel or transfo or whatever will be needed.

This is a very seriuous request, not a joke.

Thanks in advance to all those who will take their time to help me by providing a schematic that I will have to follow to built such a circuit.

This sounds to be very Dangerous! Formula for death. What could possibly supply 10KV at 50 amps but a bloody big battery or a nuclear bomb?
Do tell us more?

Yep, it's bloody dangerous, I know.

Unfortunately, I can't tell you what is the energy source exactly but don't worry it's nothing nuclear and absolutely nothing unlegal.

In short, it's sort of static energy collection system wich goes through diodes to become DC in order to be stored in large high voltage oil capacitors.

Thus, the 10kv DC potential comes from the capacitors bank wich keeps being fully charged since the DC keeps coming and coming without never ending.

I did a test to see if there could be some usefull energy stored in the capacitors bank and I could vaporise 2 #10 wire of 3 inches long by shorting it to the capacitors bank terminals one immediately after the other. Thus the capacitors banks keeps recharging quite fast.

That's all I can say. Sorry.

Now, If I could find a way to use it to make 220vac with a pure sinusoidal 60hz ultra stable frequency, then I could be able to to feed my barn and my farm electric equipment or even some of my house fancy electronic equipment like TV, radio, computer, ect.

I just need a schematic that I could use to build such an adapter. I'm good in electronic but I just dont have enough knowledge to design such a circuit.
 

I don't think you can make this 10kV 100kW baby with current available semiconductor devices.

Why don't you try to increase the value of the capacitors 10 times. It has to decrease the potential on them. Unfortunately without knowing the nature of your sourse of static energy, can't say more.

No, you need professional advise on how to do this safely. (This post is not prefessional advise).
A converter needs to be designed not just to work but so that it is not dangerous to the end user if it goes wrong.

There are many things that could go wrong. If your converter goes bang pieces of molten metal could go flying with enough energy to cause serious injury. You will need your converter in an metal box, earthed with a very thick cable that is tstrong enough to contain any possible fire or explosion.

Equipment connected to 10KV DC could still have a big enough static charge to give you a serious shock after being disconnected.
A high resistance path for leakage current could kill you.

You will need to make sure the 220V output is very solidly earthed. I'd probably go for a pair of isoaltion transformers connected together with the connection between the two connected to several 6foot earth rods.

I suspect you are overestimating the amount of energy you can get from your system. It only takes a few joules of energy in a high voltage capacitor to wreak the end of a screwdriver but it won't run a lightbulb for long.

I think that if you really had 100KW available you would have difficulty extinguishing the electric arc after vapourising 3" of wire.

First of all I fully agree with all answers you have received so far, especially with throwaway18!! You have got only one life...
The followings are NOT a professional advice either.

Thinking backwards on your problem I think if you could build a power oscillator with an appropiate electric valve, then its anode DC voltage supply could come from your capacitor bank.

Hi all,

Being a ham radio since over 30 years, I'm well aware of all the dangers involved in such a project.

I've build enough high voltage RF power amplifiers to know what I'm playing with.

Many of my RF power amplifiers were using 5kv DC at 1 amp power supplies that I personnally designed and build. These RF power amplifiers were delivering over 2Kw of sustained output power.

Thus, I realy am used to play with lethal high voltages.

I'm also very well aware of good grounding obligations as well as metal enclosing for such circuits.

I'm realy not an idiot not knowing what he deals with.

If it wouldn't be because of a severe heart attack that I had in 2003 which left me with severe memory problems, I would have most of the knowledge to design and build the needed inverter.

However, since my heart attack, I can't even remember the full ohms law just to give you an idea about how bad and how severely my memory was affected.

This is why I need help.

I'm not asking for professional help and I just can't afford to pay for it.

I'm just doing this project as a fun project strictly for my own private use, absolulety nothing else.

I have absolutely not the shadow of an intention to commercialise it.

Anyway, the potential source is not reproduceable. I tried and it never worked.

Thus, I have this single potential source standing there waiting to be used and I just need a way to use it.

Listen, if one can easily design a circuit that directly connect to 110vac to deliver hundreds of watts of 5vdc or 12vdc in switching power supplies, I'm sure that with the appropriate components, such a circuit can be designed to use 10kvdc or 5kvdc or 2.5kvdc to invert it to 220vac and that's what I'm looking for.

I found power transistors able to sustain 1500vdc at 20 amps lately when surfing on the net. Thus, with the appropriate knowledge, one can easily use several of these power transistors in series to sustain 5kv dc or even 10k dc and by coupling several such circuits in parralell one would increase the total current to hundreds of amps if needed.

Someone here certainly has the knowledge to do it and provide me with a schematic that I could use and that's all I'm asking for.

I realy hope that someone will be kind enough to help me.

I work in power electronics but only up to 500V 15Amps using IGBT's. There are some pretty heavy duty power modules available, but the top voltage seems to be 1200Volts. You would have to series these up, they do have positive thermal characteristics though to help in paralleling the devices. One scheme would be to build a buck regulator circuit to reduce the voltage to 220, then chop this up through a transformer for your supply. I can see a lot of sparks flying during the development of this project?
