wat's the purpose of having opto-coupler?

any1 plz tell me wats the usage of having opto-coupler in the drive circuit , then the output from opto-coupler connected to the gate of IGBT.......

A more deep explanation fo what IanP said.

It is necesary a isolation between high and low power
if a transitory or undesirable effect could use a low impedance path to flow and do damage. But if you use optocouplers that couldn't happen.

One example are Switching mode supplies.
