Sweep Generator

what is the difference between using a sawtooth wave and a triangle wave in a sweep generator? is it that in sawtooth, the output frequency when reach the maximum will start again from the minimum but for the triangle, the output frequency when reach the maximum will sart to decrease till minimum.

regards

Re: Sweep Generator

Yes, that is the difference. Sawtooth waveforms are used generally, since they are synchronized with a display to show the characteristic.

And it is human nature to like seeing things move from left to right, rather than from right to left, or both ways. (There is no physical reason why you could not do it in reverse, or even both ways, using a triangle wave).
Thus, the display will only be enabled (and refreshed) during the long portion of the sawtooth, while the frequency is being swept from low to high.

Re: Sweep Generator

ok, what about sine wave, why don't we use sine wave in a sweep generator?

Re: Sweep Generator

You could, but since the sinewave has a varying slope, the display (the old ones, not the latest digital ones) would produce a curve with varying intensity. That is not pleasant.

Thus, the best waveform for sweeping seems to be the sawtooth.
