wireless networks

hi everybody
im assigned a topic "wireless ad hoc networks" for a presentation in my college.
can any body say what is the literal meaning of the term "ad hoc". and suggest some good links on MANETS

Re: wireless networks

Ad hoc .. in your meaning will be: made or arranged for a particular purpose .. in other words you can call this "dedicated network"

Re: wireless networks

AD hoc also means on the spur of the moment. This type of network is arranged by stations moving into the same geographic area and joining the network as they arrive. Their existence was unknown to each other prior to the network forming.

Re: wireless networks

ad hoc including MANET(Mobile Ad Hoc Networks)and Smart Sensor Network.
The network has no fixed foundational establishment ,and no fixed router, all the
nodes are in motion. Ervery terminal can keep the communication with other nodes in any dynamic way.

Re: wireless networks

In wireless LAN terminology, there are two types of networks: Infrastructure and peer-to-peer. In the first case, there is an central controller called Access Point, through which communication among clients occur. The peer-to-peer network, is also called the ad-hoc network is a network without a central controller. All clents can talk to each other directly, not through an access point. In this case, the covered distance and the throughput are reduced.
