This is a famous metal detector called jabel j-267

It is using common parts except the PIC:

and the hex for PIC12C508R is not available....
I think that other PIC12F has similiar pinouts...
Do you guys think it would be doable to replace this PIC with newer chip and write a new firmware in C? What is that firmware doing in that metal detector? What would it be supposed to do? What's the function of PIC12C508R in schematic above?
