Hey
I am designing a microchip board with Ethernet connection, and I am wondering, is RJ45 pinout on through hole board standarized, like the USB, or can be the order 1-8 pins swapped?
PS: I know that some of jacks have LEDs and some don't, but I am asking about ethernet pins...
thanks ina dvance

There are two types of cables: straight and crossover, where several of the wires are swapped.

All of the schematics for commercial PCBs with Ethernet ports tend to use the same number scheme so that you know the appropriate signal pairs (1-2, 3-6, 4-5, 7-8) and match it up with the color code. It is also critical as far asbeing interoperable with other devices and the various modulating schemes used for 10M or 100M (MLT-3) or 1000M. And, as the link negotiations with Normal Link Pulses or Fast Link Pulses are Unipolar Pulses, they also need to be on appropriate pins to be expected/observed by the link pair device.

In short, use the same convention as other Ethernet devices if you expect things to work and you want to simplify your debugging.

I understand that you are asking about PCB jack footprint details rather than RJ45 pin assignment.

Jacks with same form have usually same pinout between manufacturers, but there's at least a bottom versus top entry configuration and also vertical versus right angle variant. Bottom and top entry have effectively mirrored pin placement, horizontal and vertical mainly differ in mounting and ground peg placement.

The cable side is the same. The PCB side could be different depending on magnetics in the connector and possibly orientation (vertical vs. right angle). Pick your desired connector and look at the spec sheet to confirm.
