Other than OPC server(COM/DCOM), Are there any other technique to log data to PC(Windows based) from remote device ?

OPC-Name is confusing..why only for process control..?

When we wish to log data from any external hardware(not necessarily only PLC Industrial data) in our PC, we can use OPC which use Microsoft COM/DCOM technology.

OLE/ActiveX is really at heart of OPC & Name should be generic for all type of data logging applications.

Any inputs welcome !

In simple terms, OPC is more than COM/DCOM. Although the classical OPC DA protocol is closely related to the Windows remote procedure call mechanism, it's involving a full featured application layer for the representation of physical data.

Secondly, the OPC relation to Windows specific protocols has turned out as serious restriction so that recent OPC variants are using different communication mechanisms.
