Hi everyone, i'm a musician an often i'm working with many electronic items, but i don't modify them or so, just use them.

I've got an external firewire soundcard connected to an old laptop which has one firewire port. The problem is that we want to change to a better laptop and nowadays there are no firewire ports on these laptops, and we don't want to buy another sound device.

My question is, it would be possible to replace the firewire port of the external device for a USB port?

I have never heard about this before, but it doesn't means it's impossible.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Firewire and usb replacement

You get a external bridge (Firewire to USB) that can be used, but you will have to check for driver compatibility.

From what I've seen you probably won't be able to find a working Firewire to USB bridge. Just google this and you'll find that all of these cables and adapters have bad reviews that say they don't work.

From the little I know about firewire every firewire port can be both a host and client, therefore any adapter would probably need to have a processor to set up the link, I highly doubt those cheap cables/adapters have something like that inside them, which is probably why there are so many complaints they don't work.

Maybe **broken link removed** will help you out in some way.
