Van der pol oscillator??

In case of digital signal processing...what exactly does a vander pol oscillator do?? I have read that it is a differential equation and it gives damped and transient sinusoidal response..but I wanted to know its physical significance...n also I would like to know how to apply van der pol equations to a given set of data.
