definition of digital mux

hi all,
Can anyone exactly give a definition of an analog mux?
thanks a lot!

analog-mux transmission gate

Its a signal selection block (as the digital mux, but wit h analog signal) realized with transfer gates with an adiacent logic for control.

Analog mux input and output are analog (and are same) the control for the transmission is Digital.
Usually implemented with Transmission gate.

Mostly, analog MUX have dual supplies +/- that is to adapt the rails of the input signal.

what is the basic principle of analog multiplexing. is it done by frequency division multiplexing or is it done by first converting the analog data into digital and then multiplexing it?

and can you tell me about some specific ICs that can do analog multiplexing
