help needed to inerface plc and raspberry pi for a project

i have to interface plc and raspberry pi for my project. the project is to transfer data from plc to pi and viceversa.. reason for this project is ethernet plc is costly... to make a low cost plc. am doing this project.. please help me. i have to transfer data through serial port is it possible?
