Hard and soft decision viterbi decoding

can anyone please explain me how to compare the hard and soft decision viterbi decoding for the same input in matlab( in the same program). How to get the best result after comparison in matlab. Thanks in advance.
 

Soft decision uses 3 bits, Sign, MSB and LSB where as hard decision only uses the Sign bit. So wouldn't all you need to do is turn off the MSB and LSB?
