What analog circuit structure would allow you to do:

1. Equalization

2. Pre-Emphasis

Comments, papers, suggestions welcome !

For Backplane Drivers, Equalizers

Thanks !

site:edaboard.com pre-emphasis

My little opinion:

Pre-emphasis is prefered over equalization if the crosstalk is not a factor in the transmission line.
Otherwise pre-emphasis will make crosstalk more
pronounced by amplifying the tranmit signals;

Equalizer is prefered if S/N is not the factor in the
tranmission line.Otherwise the noise will be amplified
by the equalizer.

It seems equalizer is more used for it is also
adaptive,and need less power.

Hope it helps.

a 10 gb/s receiver with equalizer

Pre-Emphasis is easy to realize
but can nou adaptive except a return channel

equalizer can be adaptive, but complex

cherry hooper equalizer

this is all nice, i need circuits.

you can search related papers on broadband limiting amplifiers
1 active inductor peaking
2 capacitive degeneration
3 cherry-hooper amplifier
4 ft doublers
the first three methods are commonly used

do you have any suggestions for good papers on those topics please

thanks

a LOWPASS filter will work as deemphasis and high pass filter wil work as premphasis filter

Razavi's Book "Design of ICs for Optical Communications" talks about the theory of limiting amplifiers. This book can be found in this forum.

Another paper:
A 10Gb/s CMOS Adaptive Equalizer for Backplane Applications
By Srikanth Gondi , Jri Lee , Daishi Takeuchi , Behzad Razavi
ISSCC2005

Another good paper is "A 10 Gb/s receiver with equalizer and on-chip ISI monitor in 0.11 um CMOS" by Yasumoto Tomia, Masaya Kibune, Junji Ogawa, William W.Walker, Hirotaka Tamura and Tadahiro Kuroda. 2004 Symposim On VLSI Digest of Technical Papers.

These two papers show the state of art equalizers. Also we can find some classic paper on equalization in their reference list.

Btw, if somebody can find the paper: "The design of Wide-Band Transistor Feedback Amplifier" by E.M.Cherry and D.E.Hooper, Inst.Elec.Eng.Proc, Vol.110, No.2, pp.375-389, Feb.1963. Please share a copy to me, with greatly thanks.
