USB

How can you connect a USB printer, scanner etc to a serial, parralel or docking interface port on a laptop.

Re: USB

I do not understand the meaning of your question.

There are "converters" available which modify each technology to another one: parallel to serial, serial to USB, USB to parallel etc. and each cross-combination you need.

Could you be more specific like: "how can I connect a HP4711 USB Printer to my Compaq 0815 laptop (W95 driven) which is not aware of an USB port ...."

If you are more detaiield, we may help you more specific.

USB

Serial to usb or parralell to USB
It will have to be simple and very easy to build!

USB

The laptop is a Toshiba T2130 cs

and again...edit your last psots instead of adding new posts after few minutes to gain some points!!!

Re: USB

you may buy this devices for "small money": usb to parallel or usb to serial cost 15 EUR (18 USD). So its not worth to invest any time to build such a device by yourself

These are the offers at my preferred computer shop close beneath my office:

https://www.snogard.de/index.php?kategorieId=111&artikelId=KABUSB-SERIEL
https://www.snogard.de/index.php?kategorieId=111&artikelId=KABUSB-PARALE

These devices work "from USB to (parallel, serial)", but I am shure that you will also find similar devices for the other direction for probably the same price.

Another idea: if your notebook supports PC-Card (pcmcia) slots, then you may buy some adaptor PCMCIA to usb, will cost about 25 EUR

USB

You missunderstood me.
I need an small adaptor that can connect through my parralel or serial
and provide me with an USB port
I want the schematic of it

Dear friend,
I think you associate the word "small" with "simple". There are no such things. The schematics for converters are not simple. You will need specialised chips, you'll have to manufacture PCBs for them, to assemble them (by the way, do you have PCB design and SMD assembly skills, do you have hot air station?!?). Furthermore, you'll have to write drivers for it. The transport fees for the chips required by these adapters will be tens or maybe hundreds of euro, assuming you will be able to purchase them in small qty. All these will cost you WAY more than an adapter available everywhere, and if you do not have technical skills for design and assembly computer equipment, YOU CAN'T DO IT. Try Flamingo, Ager, anything. What do you want to do remembers me about one friend when he first saw a telephonic prepayed smartcard. He imagined that inside it there are two maybe three resistors, because it is "small", so it will be easy to cheat it. So, stop spamming the forum searching for simple interface schematics between PC communication ports. Buy one. It is the simplest, cheapest and fastest way.

USB

You can't build or buy a converter from serial or parallel to USB, this is impossible because both ports are too slow.
You can only get convertes the other way around, to connect a serial or parallel device to a computers USB port.
It is impossible to get a converter to connect an USB device to a serial or parallel port.

You can get a USB adapter for the PCMCIA / PC Card slot instead.

Re: USB

Nothing is impossible, you simply have to set it up. The question is if the speed will reach out (performance), and if you have enought time to develop such a device if it is available in some shop and ready to buy ...

... because both ports are too slow.

Thats an invalid argument. The parallel port supports speed up to 1 MByte/sec in ECP mode, so this will reach out for USB 1.1 transfer. I would assume that there are converters from parallel to USB available to buy. Question is here if the device and the drivers do support both ways (if you want to connect an USB scanner to this converter)

For serial lines, the situation may differ, as the regular UART support mostly 115 Kbit/sec, but there are also serial UART chips used which support speeds up to 460 KBit/sek and higher.

You can only get convertes the other way around, to connect a serial or parallel device to a computers USB port.

I do not agreee with that there are no commercial products available at all. You have to search a while, and question is if it is available in your country.

USB

As far as I know you can't buy such a device anywhere.
Please post a link if you claim such devices are available, i have never heard of or seen such devices.
But since you have, I would like to know the link.

Since he uses an old computer without USB port, the Parallel port might not have ECP mode, so even if such a device exisist it still might not be useful.

But of course it is not completly impossible, you could always buy a second computer with both USB and paralle and connect the two computer with a parrallel cable and then connect the 2nd computer to a USB device.
But then you would loose the whole point.
It would probably be easiest and cheapest to buy a new printer and/or scanner with both parallel and USB port.
Ink-jet printers are very very cheap, the printer vendors earn all their money on the ink cartridges but loose money when they sell a printer.

Or maybe it's time to buy a new laptop instead?

If your PC has a free PC Card slot it would be cheapest to buy an PC Card USB adapter, they are not so expesive and I know they exists.
I don't think Parallel port to USB adapters exists, but according to nerd77 they do, so if he can give you a link you could try to check out the prices for such a device.

Re: USB

My laptop has ECP enabled Parallel port and about the pcmcia card: It doesnt recognize it! Maybe because I have windows 95 A. I should migrate to B! Thanx anyway!

USB

You should rather migrate to Win XP or 98SE

Re: USB

The old win95 does not well suport that "new" devices like PCMICA and USB. W95 is more a W3.11 wit a newer GUI.

So if you want to get an USB running on your laptp, there seems to be an upgrade to W98SE necessary. This release supports PCMCIA and USB very good. There are also a few minor releases of W98SE available: A, B, C. The last Version is W98SE-C, internal version number
Windows 98 4.10.2222

USB

It supports the pcmcia but it does not recognize the USB!
