GUARD RINGS

Can anyone explain me the concept of Guard Rings ?? As it is used for Latchup Protection can anyone send me any document for this?

Please refer the following books..These will give a clear idea :)

1. CMOS VLSI Design -3rd edition (Weste,Harris,Banergee) , Page No -152
2. CMOS Circuit Design,layout,and simulation - 2nd Edition(jacob baker) ,Page No - 110
