ph.d-research topics in electrical engineering

I graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (Electronic). I worked in Flextronics and Infineon before. In both companies, I involved in testing of assembled PCB (in Flextronics) and testing of IC (in Infineon). I plan to further PhD in UK, in the field of "Semiconductor Materials & Devices (SMD)" (one of the research groups in electrical engineering department of the university that I plan to join). A professor from the research group suggested the following research fields:

1) Fundamental semiconductor theory
2) Clean-room work & semiconductor device processing
3) Numerical modelling
4) Programming
5) Optical & electrical measurements
6) Design and making of circuits to undertake specialised measurements

Frankly, I hv no experience particularly in the research of "semiconductor materials & devices (SMD)". Kindly advise whether the SMD group can be considered part of "Microelectronic Engineering". Besides, kindly elaborate more about each field (1~6) mentioned above, as well as provide some research topics for each of them. I will appreciate very much if you could provide 1~2 (IEEE) papers that reflect each research field mentioned above. All comments and opinions are welcome! Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I think you have to think before you jump. According
to me, you should try and search somthing that you
would like to dig deeper in from what you are
presently doing. Take other's opinion but don't
take that as eleventh commandment. It is
always good idea to keep on continuning your
industry work towards your phd as it would
improve the quality of work far more than
anything else which inturn benifit the society
massively.

My suggestion about the area :

VLSI testing is one of the most promising area.

doing phD depends on ur personal interest. coz it always narrows ur job opportunities.
In semiconductor devices, u can do lot of work on device modelling.
I mean fabricating nano devices, diodes, FETs etc. it involves lot of semiconductor
physics.

also edge termination of silicon is a very hot topic

Hello,
Wow, you really sounds like an Infineon employee. The term 'kindly advice..' is a trade mark of IFX mail format, hehehehe.

Why dont you try to "semicon processing for nano optical device" in imaging context. Currently, production of CCD or CMOS sensor are faced with dead pixel problem. Better processing can reduce this number of dead pixels and increase their output yield. Image sensor yield is about 15% with no scrap limit (I know it from a friend who work at a company producing high res CCD).

If you increase the process up to nano scale, than the defect can be reduce. of course the technology is newly born. As I know, a PhD shouldn't be too applicative in their thesis.
