How to design FSK Transmitter and receiver without using ICs

Hi,
I am making a fun project to earn the knowledge how FSK (Frequency Shift Keying) works? For this, I found some ICs which can cover most of circuits and integrated many components. But I am interested not to use these ICs but but individual components and test it from these ICs. Please help me.
I have found IC: TDA5100, USB2743, etc...
