how to calculate traffic density

hi I have a project, I must calculate traffic density on a bridge using sensors i thought i can use infrared sensors for sensing the vehicles, one sensor on the start of the bridge and one sensor on the end of the bridge i can calculate the number of vehicles on the bridge at instant time but i cant calculate density certainly how can i calculate the density with infrared sensors or other sensors using other methods thanks...
