help on google earth

dear friends i have one doubt on using google earth. please tell me this concept will work or not.

i have a micro controller connected to a pc through serial port. the micro control will transfer GPRMC data, for example "$GPRMC , hhmmss . s , A , llll . llll , a , yyyyy . yyyy , b , ssss . ss , hhh . hh , ddmmyy , mm . m , d *CS<CR><LF>".

what is the software that can be used to get data from serial port and then use the google earth to maps the location of the L & L provided through serial port. actually i used one in the same method but i forgot it's name.

my last doubt his is a internet connection is necessary to use a google earth for above process.

waiting for your reply

thanks and regards
kj

Re: help on google earth

Hi welove8051,

Actually there is an option in Google Earth to listen to NMEA messages realtime. Try 'Tools->GPS->Realtime' in Google Earth. But I think it is specifically for some GPS module.

Regarding the internet connection, you need an active connection to plot the L&L on the Google Earth, 'zooming to the max possible extent'. Another method is, if you know approximately the place or route that you would be visitng or following, visit these places in Google Earth before you start so that the contents are saved to the cache.

Another software you may use is 'Trimble GPS Studio'. This software uses Google Maps to plot L&L but you need an active internet connection and there is no caching.
