Hi,
I am working on security camera which will take snaps and send through GPRS to server.

I need a cheap but better (price-quality trade off) camera module with jpeg compression which can be connected with ARM7 microcontroller via serial, SPI or IIC. Camera resolution should be >1Megapixel.

Where I can find this sort of camera modules? How to compare the quality of the camera modules? What is the price range for this sort of camera modules?

Any suggestion regarding this is appreciated.

What I do is purchase older Canon cameras that have the remote control functions and interface them via USB to controller. Without modifying the camera, you cannot turn it off or on with this method, but once on, you can control most of the camera's functions. You can transfer stills of any of the camera's resolutions, and you can also continually read the viewfinder, which is a reduced image resolution. Your controller will likely want to wrap these image reads and retransmit on IP for delivering over a distance.

jpeg camera module

Toshiba makes some camera modules that have built-in JPEG compression. There's a 1.3mega-pixel color one for less than $10 US at SparkFun - https://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=8668.

The control interface is I2C, but the data 8-bit parallel ouput. I don't recall ever seeing a camera module with a Serial data output.

Hi,
GetDeviceInfo >> Well, using a camera and controller will make the system huge and power consumption will increase. So, I will rather prefer camera modules.

GSM Man >> Thanks, I have seen that module before. But I have no idea on it's protocol and how it's picture quality. Did you use that? Is there any reference design, projects, articles on that?

I have found poeple using mobile's camera module in several other projects. What about the price and qaulity of those modules? Are there any other cheap single chip camera module out there?

Serial port is not necessary. But a stable communication protocol with well documentation is necessary.

Thank you.

camera module tcm8240md

If you look on the web page I referenced there are links to the datasheet and application note. Also, if you look at the SparkFun forum, you may find some useful info - as well as if you Google "TCM8240MD".

I couple of years ago I did an embedded web server security system using a similar Toshibi camera module. It was a lower resolution camera, but the image was good.

There are other camera modules out there, but they're not usually sold through the major electronic distributors. The tend to be carried by specialty outlets like SparkFun. I think it will be hard to beat the price and performance of the TCM8240MD at $10 in single quantity.

To my knowledge no one (SPARKFUN users) was able to really use the TCM8240MD camera module:
the documentation is really poor and except for using it at very low resolution, it seems "impossible" to use TCM8240MD in JPEG mode.

P.S.: the ST Microelectronics VS6724 seems to be a better candidate (really good documentation) but I was unable to get some samples to test it: Is there anyone of you who know where I can get 3 or 4 pieces of this camera module?

The problem you'll encounter with these cameras is they are intended for LARGE volume users (>1M/yr), and aren't available in small quantities. Your only chance of getting one is to find someone that has surplus inventory.

There is not a problem for a single piece, cost around 45$. Every1 may buy.
The problem is very weak datasheet.

I have a model ITM-C328, nice smal camera. Works on PC COM port with Eval. software perfectly. I can sniff com port too. )) But with microcontroler doesnt work.
Why why why?

On SYNC command camera replays with ACK, ok, datasheet says after SYNC send INITIATE command and than camera does not give ACK, but it must. Sniff code with eval. sw. has deferent sequ.. I can run camera with sniffer over TERATERM terminal and may repeat the sequencies from sniffer log when camera works with evaluation software. But it doesnt work! O boy o boy whatsup? ))) aaa, timing, but in datasheet is no timings !! )) & butheads from Comedia are in silent, no response .. in sniff code are commands whitch are not exist in datasheet!

Is some1 there already used this camera & is not so clumsy as I am ? Heeelp !

This is bingo Camera ) but ST produce this Camera only for NOKIA, no1 can buy this stuff .. nice idea )) buy Phone and pull it out ))

Personally, I don't consider $45 to be cheap - but others might. Also, these are surplus items so the supply is not guaranteed.

GSM MAN what do yu want ? 45$ is not my price, go to site and see ..
45$ is nice price. For 10 pieces what is my producte volume i will not go and fight for 10$ camera, the war cost so much.
)) if your project cost 30$ yeee )) 45$ is to much. But 30$ on project ? Huh ..

Anyway tell me which camera is like: take & use for 10 $ ??

Re: Cheap camera module?

Hi,
I have some VS6724 for sale, in case somebody need some : send me a note.
If there are people who already use this cam, I would like to get in contact to hear about the quality that I can await from it, cause I also am at the beginning of a project with it.

bye

markus_e,

Do you still have some of these cameras available?

Re: Cheap camera module?

HI

Cost of camera module is quantity dependent!

I have designed a product for the security market with camera module who cost less then 2 USD (Camera module cost) in 10000 unit quantity

The project used a CORTEX M3 micro + jpeg encoder IC + cell modem + PIR detector and a camera module

project total cost was less then 10 USD (not including the cell modem cost) for 10000 unit

All the best

Re: Cheap camera module?

ok, can you tell us which camera module do you have ? $2 wow ..
let us know about your components name ..

Re: Cheap camera module?

Hi

This Camera module has VGA resolution of 640x480

It will cost you less then 2 USD if you buy more the 10000 unit in a single order

other wise the cost is more then 30 USD (+100 unit)

Are you still interested in the brand?

All the best

Re: Cheap camera module?

Till now you can write component names !

Hi Bobi, I'm working in a project that should simply save the images from a camera module, and I'll use a similar architecture, just one question cause you certainly has much more experience, in your project what kind of jpeg encoder IC you used, whats the model name? the camera sended to it directly in YUV?
Thanks a lot
All the best
