Can you please tell me which are the different problems that VLSI design technology is facing and what are the proposed remedies for these problems?
Can you suggest a few links or e books also if possible.

Thanks in Advance! :D

VLSI technology is currently researching on the light barrier problem which restricts us in having circuits having size of 3.2nm(approx) which is roughly 2 Si atoms thick and right now it is believed that devices smaller than that cannot be made....

also lots of research is going on in the fabrication of inductor in an IC....

I think Silicon can no more be used for IC designing ....... It has its own barrier for speed...
The mobility of electron in Si is less so the speed of operation is less, so we need to go in for devices with higher mobility viz.. GaAs and carbon nano tubes, organic transistors, single electron transistors....

Spintronics is the current hot topic of research which can replace silicon tech....also alternative could be optical VLSI ....

Thanks to all you for giving such good replies. But I want to have a detailed picture of such problems. So can you please suggest a few links from where I could read more about such problems facing VLSI design technology?

the topics like nanotubes, single electron transistor and Gallium arsenide had some pretty good contents and links in wikipedia....

i'll find and post some more good links on the topics the posted.....

parasitics, power management, Heat/energy dissipation are gna stop the growth as per moors law!
