difference between staff and principal engineer

I know the question I asked (subject of this post) is highly company depending. Still I have no ideal what differentiate the "Principal Eng" and "Staff Eng", such as in terms of salary, career ladder, responsibility.......and so on....

Thanks for your help first Smile

basically, there is a big difference in terms of salary and responsibility between engineer, senior engineer and staff engineer. principal engineer is one level higher than staff, but no much difference. since you are old already.

It all depends on the company. In some the principal engineers are highly paid and are technical advisors to the managing director of the company.

in our company , principle engineers are those who are responsible for major technical breakthrough and feature development, they are giving directive instructions to following engineers to get things done. of course they are well posititioned and valued by the group.
