hi,

i've a Dlink DWL-900AP serving as an access point,

i've configured dlink as a DHCP server for wireless network,

but this DHCP server gives ip addresses to the computers in both wireless network and my LAN,

my LAN and wireless network have different classes,
i've different rules for the LAN and wireless networks,
if anyone selects DHCP in LAN he achieves wireless network rights

how can i get rid of assigning ips for the computers in LAN?

thx in advance

dlink dhcp

mmm

I don't know If your Access Point support vlan..If it is you can specify a certain vlan for SSID and other one for LAN and disable the DHCP and define the DHCP in the switch or router..

Another easy solution is to collect MAC addresses of PC's Connecting to LAN and make a reservation IP for them in the DHCP setting in your A.P

hope its clear

Regards,

Re: dlink dhcp

hi,
first of all, thanks Abo Saker for your interest,

unfortunately it seems that this device does not support VLAN (according to the product website and administration webpage of the device),

yes ur right it is possible to reserve IPs in LAN according to each PC's MAC address, but it is not practical for us,

we have different laboratories in our school and there are some personal PCs moving around for short periods of time, tracking new and old MACs is not easy :(

is it normal for the AP to assign IPs in the wired network?

dlink dhcp

Ok,

yah, it's normal for the A.P to assign IP's to the wired network, because its like a DHCP server.......espically when it's the first DHCP server seen by users.

when you said LAN network I assumed that you are connecting few PC's to the A.P (most of A.P came with switch ports), but I understand from your last massage that the A.P connecting to switch and all usres connecting to that switch........If this is your scenario.....you can assign a DHCP for LAN in your switch and that's it....

otherwise you can give layout of your connection so I can give the right answer.

Regards,

Re: dlink dhcp

wireless (need DHCP) <=> A.P. (a single cable to the switch) <=> Switch (LAN, all wired, no DHCP, PCs connected in labs and offices )

lol,
i dont know how can i show the scenario better

in wireless domain i need a DHCP server which is done by the AP,

in wired network i have static IPs one of which belongs to the AP,

in wired network i have some rules and restrictions on the connections,
but wireless network is not limited by any rules on my firewall and since AP assigns IP to the PCs in wired network this scenario becomes a ruin :)

i've used the term "LAN" for the wired network, there are all static IPs and DHCP is not a solution for me there

thank you for your patience (ability to ask the right question is an art, i think i'll find it at the end)

dlink dhcp

OK,

Thats exactly what I was expecting.....

You should know that the A.P will answer any DHCP request even from your LAN Network because its work as DHCP for them and they will be answered by the first DHCP found....you have two ways to solve this issue:

1) Block DHCP udp packets on the port connectted to the A.P by using Access List (If your switch support ACL)

2) If your Switch support VLAN, you can define two different VLANs, one for wired and the other for wireless....and set a certain IP range for wired network (you can specify any invalid IP range to inforce your users to get a static IP....or specify the range you already used in your LAN...it's up to you)...I recommend this solution.
