hi all,

i am using Virtex2 from Xilinx on a board from Memec design
and on this development board there is a DDR-SDRAM ....

our project is to sample input signal by ADC then store it on SRAM to be accessed later by parallel port....

can i use the DDR on the board instead of getting SRAM chip...what is the difference and which would be better to suit parallel port???

should i try both at first and see what comes up....what differences should i look for...

thanks,
Salma:)

1. Using DDR-SDRAM needs DDR-SDRAM Controller. It is always more difficult to control DRAM than SRAM.
2. SRAM is dual-port on your board?

we will get an SRAM chip and connect it to the kit, it isn't already on board...
so u suggest SRAM instead of on board DDR just to avoid the controller part...okay, thanks alot:)

in this case why do yuo need FPGA, if so simple just use microcontroller, will be cheaper and more quicke, unles you do some DSP on FPGA

regards,

hi

to access DDR SDRAM u need DDR controller, its access is different from basic SRAM access. U cant just connect SRAM in the place of ur DDR. If u r going to have a small memory space u can write a HDL code to implement RAM inside ur FPGA. it seems ur application is small so there are two choices...
1> u can use a microcontriller and SRAM.
2> u can use FPGA and u can create SRAM inside ur FPGA which will be still compact. but this depends on the FPGA and ur memory requirements.

that board vendor will be provided with manual and some code like DDR-SRAM controller just use that code and proceed further.. you will be provided with manual saying the address for SDRAM and data and address port..

Are You Doing EDK Project Or ISE Project.

In General SRAM Is Fastest And Easy To Use.

DDR Is Mor Complicated To Use But It Is Larger.

ISE project
we will go for the SRAM....we will a chip and connect it to the FPGA instead of using the kit DDR SDRAM
