FPGA ethernet with an external PHY

Hello,

Is there any good reason why there aren't any FPGA's with ethernet PHY ?
All the evaluation boards use another IC for the PHY layer...why?
Same question for USB...
 

Yeah, reflected sound as of underground spirits. Spelling: echognomics. Apparently it makes no financial sense for fpga vendors to specialize in that fashion.
 

Xilinx offers 1000 Base X core which, as I understand, implements parts of the PHY. I am no ethernet guy by any stretch, but I believe there is a physical limitation that prevents a good soft FPGA solution for the entire PHY.
