On linux try "man chmod" and "man chown" that can change your premission user and group, I have not try mounting NFS in windows though !! I use samba for that
I have read some where that new "*.so*" liberys contain all of the old data + new stuff, so somtimes setting up progz. on a new vertion rh -suse whatever linux dist. is a matter of check what vertion of libs. your progz. need and them symlink them to there newer vertion.

I had the same problems w/ rh7.3 and a openbsd server, it show out to be some settings in the kernel whice wasn't complied in !? I had been upgrading from 7.1 and up to 7.3.
Recompile the kernel w. all nfs options on did the job !!
I run 7.1 and 7.2 Redhat and they are very nice. I read about SUSE8.0 pro (8 cds) and it look also very nice, specialy the install should be very easy, hopefully you only have to do it one time ;-)
While on my redhat I have to do it 3 times to get it prober setup, at that time I was a LINUX...

suse have a better install interface
i run redhat 7.2 but I want to check out suse

wine, win4lin or what they call them is cool for app. wirtten AS "nice" windows apps.
vmware is VERY nice if you what to run hole guest systems, also BSD sys or OS2 even win3.11 ?? And it works like a dream on a fast machine.

Well first you have to choose what system (linux)
If you need the best(secure) server is't openBSD check w*w.openbsd.org
you can install openbsd via network or buy there cd.
then download ports tree and start install what progs. you could use webmin (webmin.com).

Can someone tell me what the diffs. between haveing a RH7.1 and update it (new kernel new disktop etc ) all the time (w/ up2date) . And then re-install/update a 7.3 ?? Is't the same ?
Also another way to do it : with vmware (https://www.vmware.com) I run linux rd71 with win2000 in a window, if preforme nice. You can run linux/unix in windows too..
