Well... currently, apart from the BSD derivatives mentionned above, you can also choose one of the GNU/Linux distros that are available: RedHat,Suse,Debian,Slackware, etc... they are all easy to install (except maybe the Slackware) and contain all the server you could need...

A very simple and basic prog is XCircuit, from the unix world... you can compile it and run it under cygwin normally. Very easy to use. For small circuits it's OK.
I'm curious to see the method you use.... I can't think of any "easy" way to convert such a bitmap to a vector file, with detection of the logic symbols, wires, pins, etc.... Can you elaborate on your method phytex?

depends of the use. I you need a quick and dirty circuit with a uc in 5mn, then I think the PIC is the most common. Few external parts (osc+2 capa) and it works. Scenix if you need more power. Or Atmel. Then all the "high-end" uc, like z80, 8051, 68hc11, etc...
