MMC (SPI) card has 1-bit interface and SD has 4-bit, so SD is faster than MMC. With SPI interface setting, SD is compatible with MMC. I guess you didn't set the SD card mode correctly. There is a control to select between SD or SPI. Check the enclosed SD spec.

For interfacing SD card, you could read any microcontroller's spec that comes with SPI interface. A simplfied spec is enclosed. You might need to pay for the complete SD spec.

Check Microchip website. There are many 3V3 MCUs support SPI interface. There is three wire connection between the MCU and SD card and no resisters needed.

I suggest SD/MMC. It is flexible, simple hardware design, cheap, and there are a lots of MCUs has SPI interface. The program implementation is easy.
