UHF EPC Gen2 technology reads 5-15 meter. Limiting factors:
1. antenna gain
2. reader output power (27-30dBm is fine)
3. reader sensitivity
Most readers are capable of up to 5 meter reading distance when combined with a decent 6-8 dBi gain antenna. Even cheap deskreaders.

Tags use ultra low power to maximize reading range. Envelope detection is low power, even better, it is the way to harvast power for the tag to operate.
Tags must also be low cost, so small die area.
