There are two types connected mode in UMTS.
1. CS Connected
2. PS Connected
When UE is doing any activity (eg. CS call, PS Call, SMS, Video telephony, etc) it should be in RRC Connected mode.
In idle mode UE can do reselection, receive paging, etc.
If you need more details about RRC states...
The main difference is:
1. Data rate
2. Modulation scheme used
3. Bandwidth

There are couple of things you need to check:
1. What you want to learn. (Physical Layer, Layer 2, Layer 3 or NAS)
2. On which domain you want to work. (UE side or NW side)
I think if you know the answers of above two you then just concentrate.
Like I concentrate on RLC from Layer 2 right...
differences between 2g and 3g
Checkout the main differences between 3G from 2G
Bit rates up to 2 Mbps;
Variable bit rate to offer bandwidth on demand;
Multiplexing of services with different quality requirements on a single connection, e.g. speech, video and packet data;
Delay requirements...
gsm 1800 channels
GSM-900 and GSM-1800 are used in most parts of the world: Europe, Middle East, Africa, Australia and most of Asia. In South Americas it is in Costa Rica (GSM-1800), Brazil (GSM-850, 900 and 1800), Guatemala (GSM-850, GSM-900 and 1900), El Salvador (GSM-850, GSM-900 and 1900)...
